It came from Steve Jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You only need to accomplish three important things each day.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern working life is filled with distractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emails arrive constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meetings consume hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social media competes for attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And people can finish an exhausting day feeling as though they were busy for ten hours without actually accomplishing the things that mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Leary believes this is one of the biggest differences between ordinary performers and highly successful founders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking recently on the Build or Break<\/em> podcast, the Canadian businessman explained that he tries to identify three genuinely important objectives for each day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those come first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anything preventing him from completing them is treated as noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It sounds almost absurdly simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But O\u2019Leary says it took an encounter with one of the most famous entrepreneurs in history for him to understand how powerful the principle could be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lesson Came From Steve Jobs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Leary’s connection with Jobs dates back to the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time, O\u2019Leary was building SoftKey Software Products, which eventually became The Learning Company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His company was involved in educational software for Apple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Leary recalled suggesting that Jobs listen to students and teachers to understand what they wanted from the software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jobs wasn’t particularly interested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to O\u2019Leary’s recollection, Jobs believed Apple needed to maintain control over the vision rather than allow outside opinions to dictate what it created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Leary initially found the approach difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually, however, he came to see something underneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jobs had an extraordinary ability to distinguish between information that mattered and information that did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Leary Calls It \u201cSignal to Noise\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

That distinction became central to the way O\u2019Leary thinks about productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He describes it as the ratio between signal and noise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Signal is whatever directly contributes to the objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noise is everything competing for attention without meaningfully advancing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Leary believes Jobs operated at something close to an 80\/20 ratio \u2014 an unusually intense focus on signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That could make Jobs extremely difficult to work with, O\u2019Leary acknowledged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he also believes that same characteristic contributed to what Jobs accomplished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is an uncomfortable element to that philosophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extreme focus does not necessarily make someone pleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And O\u2019Leary doesn’t pretend otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He Sees the Same Quality in Elon Musk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Leary says he has witnessed a similar mentality in Elon Musk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He recalled encountering Musk socially at Shark Tank<\/em> producer Mark Burnett’s Christmas parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Musk decided a conversation was not providing anything useful, according to O\u2019Leary, he could simply leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Socially awkward?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Leary sees something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He sees someone refusing to spend a limited resource \u2014 time \u2014 on something he has already decided does not matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That distinction reveals quite a lot about O\u2019Leary’s own philosophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI Don\u2019t Care\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Leary has accumulated plenty of critics during his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His television persona is deliberately confrontational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His political commentary can be provocative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His financial advice is frequently delivered without much concern for whether the person hearing it likes the message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But O\u2019Leary says criticism itself can become another form of noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If an opinion does not change his business, investments or objectives, he questions why he should spend energy responding to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That does not mean ignoring useful criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It means deciding whether criticism actually contains useful information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Mark Carney hosted a major investment summit in Toronto this week, bringing together some of the world’s largest institutional investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government is attempting to attract capital into Canadian mining, energy, infrastructure, technology and data-centre projects as the country tries to reduce its economic dependence on the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 160 potential projects representing over C$1 trillion<\/strong> in investment were being presented around the summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That overlaps remarkably closely with what O\u2019Leary has been arguing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada has assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has skilled workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What it needs is capital willing to look beyond the immediate political uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Success is not necessarily about doing more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
